The Bug That Won: What the Spotted Lanternfly Means for the Shenandoah Valley
It had spread too far and too fast to contain.
In March 2025, Virginia quietly made an admission most farmers in the Shenandoah Valley already knew from their own fields: the spotted lanternfly had won the containment battle. After nearly seven years of quarantines, permit requirements, inspection mandates, and public awareness campaigns that included telling every resident to squash the insect on sight, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services repealed the state’s spotted lanternfly quarantine entirely. It had spread too far and too fast to contain.
The entire Shenandoah Valley is now part of that spread.
How It Got Here and Why It Moved So Fast
The spotted lanternfly, native to China, was first detected in the US in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 2014, and reached Virginia in Winchester in January 2018. Mark Sutphin, the extension agent in Frederick County who has tracked the insect’s presence in the northern Valley since that first detection, has been part of the regional identification and monitoring effort from the beginning, working alongside Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Northern Shenandoah Valley Master Gardener Association to document its spread.
That spread has been relentless. Natural movement is estimated at about ten miles per year, but the spotted lanternfly is an exceptionally effective hitchhiker, capable of laying egg masses on vehicles, lumber, outdoor furniture, shipping containers, and any other surface that might carry it far beyond its natural range in a single day. Virginia Tech entomologists have described the risk of spread by vehicle as potentially enabling movement of hundreds of miles at a time. That’s largely how the insect traveled the length of the Valley so quickly, following I-81 and the freight corridors running beside it.
What It Does to Plants
The spotted lanternfly doesn’t eat leaves or fruit. It pierces the bark of host plants and sucks sap from the cambium layer, the same living tissue that delivers water and nutrients through a plant. Jules Amanita, the spotted lanternfly field supervisor for VDACS, has explained the mechanism in specific terms to reporters: the insect feeds on the sap of grapevines and other plants, weakening them over time and reducing fruit yield, while also increasing susceptibility to frost, drought, and other pests. As the insect feeds and excretes, it leaves a sticky substance called honeydew on surrounding surfaces, which then grows a sooty mold that blocks photosynthesis on leaves below.
Grapes are the insect’s second-favorite host, after the invasive tree of heaven that lines roadsides across the Valley. That pairing is a particular problem for a region where vineyard acreage has grown significantly over the past two decades, as former apple orchards and open farmland converted to wine production. The spotted lanternfly’s preferred hosts include grapes, peaches, hops, black walnut, silver maple, oak, and pine, which puts Valley agriculture and the region’s tree canopy both squarely in its path.
Karl Hambsch, a vineyard manager at Loving Cup Vineyard and Winery in Albemarle County, describes the damage as slow and cumulative rather than immediate: they are sucking sap out of the vines like a vampire, and can slowly, over time, degrade the health of a vine. Valley vineyards face the same dynamic, since Rockingham, Augusta, and Shenandoah counties all fall within the insect’s established range.
How to Identify It, Season by Season
The spotted lanternfly looks different depending on when you encounter it. In early spring through early summer, look for egg masses: gray-brown smears about an inch long, resembling dried mud or putty, found on tree bark, wooden fences, stone walls, and outdoor furniture. From May through July, the first three nymphal stages are wingless and black, with white spots on the body and legs. The fourth and final nymphal stage turns bright red with black and white markings, making it considerably easier to spot. Adults, present from late July through the first hard frost, are the stage most people recognize: grayish wings with black spots folded over a body that reveals vivid red hindwings when the insect opens up.
Adults congregate in large numbers on host trees and vines in late summer, which is when the visual impact tends to alarm residents most. Hundreds on a single tree trunk aren’t unusual in established infestations.
What to Do About It
The quarantine’s repeal doesn’t mean nothing can be done. VDACS still recommends physical removal and destruction for small infestations, scraping egg masses into a bag of hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol before disposal, and squashing nymphs and adults when spotted. For larger or more established infestations, particularly on high-value plants or trees, several insecticides are registered for use against spotted lanternfly in Virginia, with guidance available through Virginia Cooperative Extension.
For residents and visitors moving in or out of the Valley, the most important practical step is checking vehicles before driving. Egg masses are laid on wheel wells, bumpers, truck beds, and the undersides of trailers, making any vehicle a potential carrier to areas where the insect hasn’t yet established. The quarantine may be gone, but the insect doesn’t care about that.
